
This is one of my favorite Russian artists, Leon Bakst. He painted this as one of his costume designs for the ballet Firebird in 1910. He was also Marc Chagall's teacher. I love the colors, the gestures, the twirls, the elongated bodies. Bakst left St. Petersburg to live in Paris because as a jew, he could only live in the Pale of Settlement of Russia. A zone created by Catherine the Great, to ghettoize my peeps, the jews. Despite getting pushed around, we produced some amazing art.
